Classic Polo Shirts for Men: Plain Band Collar, No Logo

A polo is classic when nothing about it can be dated to a particular year. Test it with four questions and the answer is usually obvious.

• Would the proportion have looked odd ten years ago? Oversized boxes, dropped shoulders and cropped hems all carry a date stamp. A regular cut does not.
• Is there anything to read? Slogans age faster than the garment they sit on. So do large logos and prints.
• Is the colour a colour, or a shade of a colour? Black survives. So do cream, grey and one strong red. A seasonal in-between tone does not.
• Does the neckline hold its shape when you take it off? A collar with real structure lasts through the wearing; a soft roll of jersey does not.

Only the fourth question is about construction, and it is the one most brands lose. A collar is the most visible part of any top worn without a jacket. Build it properly and the piece stays presentable; skip it and the garment is casual by default, whatever the label claims.

The mandarin band collar predates the fold-down collar it replaced. Dress shirts were once built with a plain neckband and a separate stiff collar buttoned onto it, so the collar could be washed and replaced on its own. Remove the detachable part and what remains is the band. That shape has been in menswear for well over a century, which is roughly the strongest claim to classic status any detail can have.

The yarn is a spun staple yarn with a visible halo of short fibres, which keeps the surface matte and takes any plastic shine out of it.

Interest at close range and calm at long range is the whole quiet-luxury argument in one garment. Nothing announces itself. Everything holds up when someone looks properly.

Heather grey deserves a note. Melange is not grey dye on a grey yarn: it is several tones spun together, so the surface shifts slightly as light moves across it. That is why grey knits read warmer than flat grey fabric, and why grey has stayed in menswear since long before anyone was calling it a neutral.

Classic fit means regular fit: the shoulder seam sits at the edge of the shoulder, the body skims without gripping, the sleeve ends on the upper arm. It is not slim and it is not oversized. Both of those are positions, and positions date.

The knit here is fully opaque and dense enough to hang rather than cling, so the fit you see is the cut and not the outline of whatever is underneath. The hem is gently curved, which lets the same piece work tucked into wool trousers and loose over denim. Ribbed cuffs finish the sleeves so the ends keep a defined edge instead of flapping.
