Black Polo Shirts for Men: the Reflection Polo in Soft Black Cotton

Pure black is #000000. This is not that. #201E22 is rgb 32, 30, 34: a fraction more blue than green, which puts it a hair to the cool side of neutral, and about two shades off the bottom of the scale rather than sitting on it.

On paper that is nothing. On a person it is the difference between a garment and a hole. A printer's black absorbs so completely that a camera has nothing to meter against, and the top flattens into a shape with no seams, no drape and no shoulder in it. A soft black keeps just enough information for the eye and the sensor to find the edge of a sleeve. That is why this colourway photographs, and why it holds its form on a video call under a ceiling light instead of turning into a dark rectangle where your chest used to be.

It also settles an argument with the rest of your wardrobe. Charcoal wool next to a printer's black reads as a mismatch, because one of the two is obviously trying harder than the other. #201E22 sits beside charcoal without either of them looking wrong.

In open sun, yes. A dark surface takes up more of what lands on it than a pale one, and of our four colourways black takes up the most and cream the least. Anyone who has crossed a Cairo car park in July already knows this and does not need it dressed up.

What actually matters is how much of your day is spent in open sun. For most people working in Cairo, Giza or Alexandria it is minutes rather than hours: the walk from the car, the wait for a lift, the stretch of pavement to a restaurant. Between those minutes you are in air conditioning, and indoors the colour of your shirt stops mattering at all.

So the honest split is by the shape of the day, not by the season. A day that runs office, car, meeting, dinner is a black day in August as much as in December. A day that runs site visit, market, open terrace at two in the afternoon is a day for a pale colour. If most of your days are the second kind, buy the pale one first and come back for this one.

These are the black figures only, and they are not the figures for the other three colourways. Read them against a top you already own and like the fit of, laid out flat, rather than against the size you usually take from another label.

Width is underarm seam to underarm seam with the piece flat, so it is half the way round the chest and not the full circumference. Length is the high point of the shoulder straight down to the hem. No shoulder, sleeve or neck figure is given here, because none is published. Every size of the black is 4 cm shorter in the body than the same size in cream or heather grey, and 2 cm shorter than crimson. It is also 1 cm wider. Black in L is 57 wide and 70 long; cream in L is 56 wide and 74 long. That is not a rounding error and it is not a typo on this page.

The consequence is about how you wear it rather than whether it fits. Tucked in, 4 cm is invisible and the extra centimetre across the chest is welcome. Worn out, 4 cm is the difference between a hem that sits on the hip bone and one that sits below it. If you are tall, or if you only ever wear a polo out over the trouser, that is the argument for taking the next size up in this colourway and in this colourway only.

If you already own the Reflection Polo in cream or heather grey and the size is right, order the same size in black and expect it to sit a little higher and a little easier across the chest. Go up a size only if you know you wear it loose. All four charts side by side make the gap obvious in a way one page cannot.

Five that work, in the order they are easiest to get right.

• Stone or sand chinos. The most contrast available without going to white, and the pairing that makes black look chosen rather than defaulted to.
• Mid grey wool. The office answer. Grey is the one trouser that lets black read as formal without reading as a uniform.
• Olive. Quietly the best of the five. Olive carries enough warmth to stop black going cold, and few men reach for it, so it looks considered.
• Indigo denim. Black over denim is the oldest safe combination in menswear and has never needed defending.
• Black. Possible, and the hardest of the five. It has a section of its own below.

Two to leave alone. Brown that leans red fights the cool cast in #201E22 and both end up looking muddy. And navy trousers under a black top read as an accident from three metres away, because at that distance nobody can tell whether you meant it.

Two blacks are almost never the same black. Put #201E22 against a trouser dyed closer to #000000 and the top does not match it, it looks faded next to it, which is the one thing a black garment must never look. The failure is arithmetic rather than taste.

The way out is to stop trying to match the shade and change the texture instead. A knit against a woven does the work: this polo over a wool or a heavy cotton trouser reads as deliberate even when the two blacks are a shade apart, because the surfaces are obviously different materials rather than a failed match. Keep it matte against matte and away from anything with a sheen, which is where black-on-black turns into evening wear by accident.

Then keep the shoes and the belt out of the argument. Brown leather, or a clean white sole, gives the eye somewhere to land and stops the whole outfit reading as one unbroken column.

Choose black when the rest of the outfit is doing the talking, charcoal when you want black without the hard edge, and navy when the room is formal and you want to look awake in it. The three are the working neutrals and the differences between them are small but real.

• Black gives the strongest outline. It separates the body from a lighter background, which is why it photographs well and why it reads as deliberate.
• Charcoal softens that edge. In a room full of dark suits charcoal disappears and black does not.
• Navy carries a warmth that black cannot, which matters when your face is the main thing people are looking at.

Nobody needs all three. One black and one grey cover a normal working week, and the black is the one you reach for when you have not thought about it. If grey is where you would rather start, the heather grey polo makes that case on its own page.

Three places, and they are worth saying plainly rather than selling around.

Open midday between June and September, for the reason set out above. A summer wedding under a tent in the afternoon, where every pale colour in the room will look cooler than you do and the photographs will say so. And a formal occasion or a condolence visit, where a long-sleeve shirt is what is expected and a short-sleeve knit is the wrong garment whatever colour it happens to be. Black does not make it right.

Against those three, black is the best travelling colour we make. It survives a suitcase, a long car and a full day without announcing any of it, and it is the piece you can pack knowing it will go with whatever else ended up in the bag.

Black shows pale things the way no other colour does. A towel that sheds, a car seat, a pale jumper left on a chair, and above all Cairo air in the khamaseen weeks, when anything outdoors picks up a fine light dust inside an hour.

None of that is a fault in the cloth. It is what a dark surface does, and it is the trade you accept in return for the outline black gives you. Practically: keep it away from pale terry, and brush the shoulders and the chest before you leave rather than after you arrive. Heather grey hides dust and lint better than anything else in the range, and the cream has the exact opposite problem, since it shows everything black does not and hides everything black shows.
